Public bug reported:

Using a fresh install of 8.04 to acer aspire 4315 from the "install"
icon in the live desktop - tested the microphone with the sound
recorder. Worked well after adding and adjusting sliders. However:

Installed Linuxant drivers to attempt to get the modem working - which
rendered the laptop unbootable. (Linuxant have been informed, this is
not the bug.) I reinstalled 8.04 using the "install" option from the
boot menu.

I discovered that some sliders were not available in the volume-control
> edit > preferences. However, the mic wasn't the first thing I'd
tested... so maybe some fo my fiddling messed it up? No matter -
reinstall, again, from the desktop and the sliders come back.

However, while all the rest of the sound is fine, all I record off the
mic is a load of clicks.

So I have two observations here:
1. Mic suddenly doesn't record anything.
2. Different sliders are available in different install methods. (Yep -
different in alternate too.)

What should I be looking at?

Acer are offering these laptops cheaply to NZers through Dick Smith
Electronics - there is a lot of interest from non-tech types, and I have
even attracted some Acer NZ management interest. Acer, however,
officially cite "limitations of linux" for HW issues.
www.hbclinux.net.nz/acer4315-804.html has been dedicated to enabling
this machine.
