I finally solved my problem thanks to the description found in #204578. 
Actually this entry is a duplicate of it.
The problem seems to be a version mismatch of ALSA included in the linux source 
(1.0.15) and the version which is run by Ubuntu (1.0.16). However, the EM28xx 
source compiles against the kernel source.

The solution is to use any other kernel that supplies the same ALSA
version that is actually used.

Maybe it would be simple to update EM28xx so it can compile against the
ALSA source shipped by "linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic" (fetch
using "apt-get source linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic")?
