Please provide the output of the following commands in a terminal:
$ uname -a
$ dpkg -l | grep linux-image
$ dpkg -l | grep virtualbox

I suspect, you've installed e.g. virtualbox-ose-modules-386 on a generic
system, which caused the -386 kernel, but not the modules to get
installed.
