Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.24-16-386-di
==================== Description: Ubuntu 8.04 Release: 8.04 linux-image-2.6.24-16-386: Installed: 2.6.24-16.30 Candidate: 2.6.24-16.30 Version table: *** 2.6.24-16.30 0 500 http://no.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ==================== HP Compaq DC7700 runs very slowly under 8.04. There is already a solution for this system but I was asked to raise it anyway since 7.10 worked and hence this is a regression (despite the fix). Problem description: The boot time under 7.10 was about 11 seconds but is 10 minutes + in 8.04 (see attached dmesg from 8.04) Just for information, this hardware (strange HP intel G965 thing) previous to 7.10 did not boot / run at all. This is not a task hogging the CPU, more like the CPU running very slowly as everything is affected / running slowly. Launching something (simple) takes 1 minute to complete, 100% CPU. Selecting a new (non cached) menu is again 40+ seconds before the menu is seen 100% CPU. Ksysguard montior requires 60%+ of the CPU just when idling, so clearly is like the CPU is slow. Screen drawing is also very very slow on this hardware. However, and to make it more complicated, this was an intermittent fault on 7.10 too. My guess of the problem was a low level kernel problem with this hardware, which has regressed under 8.04. I followed many threads to find some answers and its important to note that no kernel parameters where resolving it. i.e. acpi=off, pci=conf1 etc etc. Other bugs seem to discuss CPUs running HOT on the same or similar hardware (which could be related to this problem). It is 100% reproducible on a stock HP DC7700. Solution: Not every bug gets a solution before its raised hehe The BIOS in the HP DC7700 is total nonsense it seems, upgrading to 1.14 (the latest from HP) does resolve all issues under this bug. As I say I was asked to raise it anyway because it is a regression for some reason (from 7.10 which worked ok), but also others will trip badly from it. /G ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: boot herdy kernel slow -- Herdy very very very slow on HP DC7700 (and perhaps other Intel based hardware). https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223647 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
