yeah .. i agreed with u bayger .. while using 7.10 (gutsy) creative xmod
worked fine. how i do it can view it here :

but since upgrading to hardy heron (8.04) im try to do the same thing but it 
doesn't work in hardy :(
i've already try to manually install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-386 , but 
its still can't work fine with me.

i just only can use the xmod knob to control volume but can't get the
output from it .. hope it can fix a.s.a.p
