There was a workaround for a Nvidia driver issue and Compiz posted here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/194851/comments/37 Interestingly it also fixes this problem as well. It seems to be just a workaround though. I think the underlying problem has to do with the packaging of the driver since this bug and the bug with Compiz only seem to affect the 8 series cards.
