It is a bug indeed (as long as design can have bugs too).

It is possible to add a bookmark, of course. So when you use your
bookmark you get there, the FTP place is mounted, and you get another
bookmark in your places list. For the rest of your session you get two
bookmarks differently named pointing to the same place. This is
definitely a bug.

Also, having the mounted FTP site in the desktop is not desirable for
many. This should be optional behaviour. If you consider the mounted FTP
site a volume, then use a disk icon for it. For consistency sake.
Otherwise it just look like "some folder has appeared in my desktop and
I can't get rid of it", which is frankly annoying.
