Bug report was offered as part of the upgrade. When it all unravelled itself I was again offered the choice of which smb.config.
No shutdown, but Heron on the desktop, and new versions of all sorts. Apart from Samba all seemed to be OK. Shutdown and restart gave some unfamiliar error messages but nothing requesting action (or giving me any choice). It all came back OK. Reinstallation of Samba seems to have sorted everything. Congratulations on a robust upgrade path!
