I'm experiencing this on hardy final alternate cdrom too. The debian installer immediately stops when it tries to mount the cdrom. If I switch to the console and try to mount the cdrom, if gives me the "invalid argument" error.
On beta I was able to boot from the live environment, but was unable to configure my LVM. Alternate is needed.
