Upon further testing, it appears that my USB devices work with mem=2G
also- which is weird, because I would have expected odd things to happen
after 0x40000000, not 0x80000000.

Are there any more diagnostics I can perform?  I understand that fglrx
taints the kernel, is there any way of booting without that module to
test things?
