hey that's great! too late for the cdrom repo... i switched the 
/etc/apt/sources.list to a non ubuntu server and it was fast...
oh well...
everything is fixed now for me, although i never used the gui upgrader...

what i would suggest you do is:
cd /var/log/dist-upgrade/
sudo rm *
sudo do-release-upgrade (or however you are doing it with ./hardy)
and then look at the new log files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/
it's probably a hint at something broken.
post them here if you like and i'll see what i can figure out.
for me it was esound that was bad.
