I was running 7.10 i386 version on an AMD 64 because of the lack of 64-bit Java (yes I have tried all the workarounds and they don't help me with Hushmail java applet).
After upgrading from 7.10 (i386) to 8.04 (i386) I experienced the reported problem with launching Login Window. The HDD light flicks rapidly, the "starting Login Window" icon on the bottom panel disappears, and the HDD light continues to clicker. After a minute or two I shut down the machine to stop it. Have done this twice, same outcome.
