Perhaps you have misunderstood: the machine fails to boot, not because of a 
kernel
problem or a bootloader problem, but because the BIOS fails to find the 
bootloader
in the first place!  As mentioned in the bug report, gutsy installed fine, and
upgraded perfectly to hardy.  This shows that there is no problem with hardy's
kernel or bootloader.  It seems clear to me that there is something wrong with
installation of grub in 8.04.  In the "advanced" section of the installer you 
can
see where it intends to install grub.  I did take a peek and both gutsy and 
hardy
were installing it to the same place (if I recall correctly, to (hd0) ).  Note 
that
the macpro has an unusual BIOS (EFI) and partition layout (GPT).

Anyway, I will attach some info about the machine to the bug report.
