xrandr doesn't make permanent changes to the configuration, iirc. Just adding my voice, I had the issue where auto-configure wouldn't detect my Intel 965, and in addition displayconfig-gtk wouldn't change the driver either. I could only resolve the issue by installing xserver- xorg from gutsy and running dpkg-reconfigure, then upgrading again.
