I have Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon - released in October 2007 I am using a HP Pavilion Dv 1100, and I have exactly the same problem, I am not a very techinical guy in Linux, but when I shut down the system either Restart or Shutdown, is hangs in black screen and the last error it shows is just the same as everybody mentions here.
So to shut down the computer I have use the On/Off Switch.
