I have had this problem on a Dell Inspiron 710m laptop as well. I've been running Ubuntu on this laptop since Breezy, and I've only seen this start to happen recently. I've always upgraded to the new release in the first week, and this problem didn't surface in Gutsy until Jan or Feb 2008. I just installed the Hardy RC two nights ago and had the same issue in a clean install.
