Umm, that's not true.   Self-signed certs can be be over-ridden.
Furthermore, the error is "The certificate is not trusted because it is
self signed. (Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)" and not
"Certificate key usage inadequate for attempted operation. (Error code:
sec_error_inadequate_key_usage)"
