I have the same problem on my IBM x61 laptop. The secondary screen is always disabled. I tried to use xrandrx to enable VGA output, but it is always disconnected even the monitor is connected.
I can't switch to my external monitor. Sebastian you mentioned that this would be fixed in half a year (by now).
