I had same bug. It is fixed in sshfs 1.9 . When I was testing with sshfs 1.9, copying dir with 15.000 files in subdirs, and find . it, it was fine for hours. As soon as I switched back to stock sshfs 1.7, after 3 minutes the copy failed, and I got:
