OK everyone- more data. I was able to get sound somewhat working again. I
found out that if I run the command:
sudo modprobe snd

then the /dev/snd directory reappears (with 2 items underneath).

I then need to run command:
sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel

and I then have sound. I still can not run alsamixer. I get the following:
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory

I can not yet figure out what to run to get /dev/dsp which I think I
need for the mixer function to work.

However, I imagine there is a bug that is preventing /dev/snd from being
auto-created. How can I get this to happen automatically.
