Switching to using ndiswrapper seems to have solved the issue. It's worth noting that this problem has occurred before, and seems to occur with every alternate release of network-manager. Obviously it is down to an incompatibility being created between it and the driver, but the driver has had NO updates, and so it should not have broken my wireless by updating one or more network manager components
