Update: the problem is caused by the german language pack I installed from the mozilla site: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0b5/linux-i686/xpi/de.xpi It's not part of the ubuntu hardy repository yet (and now I now why). After deactivating the language pack, printing works again as expected.
