I just encountered the same on upgrading from dapper to hardy. After skimming
through the config files, I found out that update-exim4.conf greps through
/etc/exim4/conf.d, including backup files ("01....~") for the DEBCONF strings.
After removing all *~ files, it went through. This could/should be fixed before
hardy goes gold.
