Using a Toshiba Satellite Pro P100 and running Kubuntu Hardy beta upgraded from Kubuntu Gutsy and kept up to date on a daily basis. I tried the above fix and I still do not have usplash working as expected. I get the initial side-to-side movement of the progress bar but it disappears once the "Reading files required for boot" stage is reached. I also tried running it manually and never saw the progress bar appear in another terminal at all.
