I'd like to thank Stefan for his response, and for assisting me in
understanding how Ilja's patch is applied (I've never used a patch
before).  So, for the benefit of anyone else who'd like to use the
script above:

1. Make sure you have the tool "patch" installed (sudo apt-get install patch)
2. Save Ilja's patch file to your home directory
3. In your home directory run:
sudo patch /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh authatieventsd.patch

The file will be patched and a backup of the original file will be created
in /etc/ati/
