[SOLVED] at least for me. Coincidentally, I used the System->Admin->Login Window to change the background image. Now, gdm no longer crash on first log in.
By the way, where is the configuration file for this gdm login (if any). I would like to diff my current one with the previous (crash version) to see if that is the problem.
