thanks Philippe Coval. the problem is that the programs (mostly games, afaik) that require fmod require it because it is cross-platform. so the problem is that any alternative that isn't cross-platform creates a barrier to it being used. for instance, i (beta/alpha) test skulltag, a zdoom port. i recommended that they switch from fmod to a different sound library like libavc, ffmpeg, sox, or something like that. they linux author said that since skulltag is based on zdoom, it wouldn't be easy to switch the sound library since zdoom requires fmod. an unfortunate situation, but its not impossible that it couldn't happen at some point.
