Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After some time, the system freezes. However, the mouse is still moving but
pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE or CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does not work.
To reboot the PC, a hard reset is needed. It is also possible to connect to the
computer through SSH and call reboot. Disabling the compiz effects solves the
problem.

It seems the problem comes from the "ati open driver" used with an
X-Series ATI video card (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/190948).

Suggestion: This video card (1002:5b62: RV380[Radeon X600 (PCIE)])
should be blacklisted in the compiz startup script until the bug is
fixed...
