Public bug reported:

Short Description:

switching to console while Gnome session logging happens, then reverting
causes refresh/painting issues for panels and dialogs

Steps to reproduce
1. boot
2. log in GDM
3. while log in happens (this usualy takes > 30 sec on my machine), switch to
TTY (CTRL+ALT+F1)
4. wait
5. switch to GUI (CTRL+ALT+F7)

Results:
* top & bottom panels & dialog asking for default keyring password appear
greyed with no image or text visible. Switching back and forth to TTY doesn't
solve the issue.

Work-around
log off and log in agani without switching to console...

This is maybe specific to my video driver.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
