Hmm.. I though and read somewhere, that it's possible to combine KDE4 (effects off) with compiz.. But it doesn't matter actually. Because Firefox hasn't worked for me in KDE4 also.
Now I'm using KDE4 with effects and Konq is OK. Firefox is broken too.
