Networks with 10.0.0.0 are class A networks (see
http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space).  So a netmask of
255.0.0.0 is the standard default.

Next questions:

(1) where did you get 255.255.0.0 as the netmask? from your ISP? (If so,
I presume they are partitioning their network.)

(2) what software are you using the configure your network?
NetworkManager, manual settings in /etc/network/inferfaces, or something
else?
