To check for updates requires downloading upwards of 4 megs of data sometimes, and is not always preferred by people on slow connections. It can be set to check for updates every day, which is plenty on a stable release. And since we don't want to make the packages different just for the development cycle (special changes aren't good for finding all bugs) it probably won't be set to update more frequently.
