The method described there looks fine, although I use ndisgtk which is
only one step once I have the Windows drivers.

Did you look at Bug #197558 as indicated in the docs ? It describes a
bug involving the order in which the ndiswrapper module was loaded. Can
you try the workaround described there and report back ? I am using beta
+ updates fresh install (as of today) and don't have that issue anymore
but I'd suggest giving it  a try.
