I explained why it is necessary for me to run the -386 kernel rather
than the -generic: "required to enable ltmodem/LucentAgere winmodem on
my IBM ThinkPad". The generic kernel does not include these modules:

 - madwifi (Atheros)
 - fglrx (ATI)
 - nvidia
 - fcdsl, fcdsl2, fcdslsl, fcdslslusb, fcdslusb, fcdslusb2, fcdslusba,
   fcpci, fcusb, fwlanusb, fxusb (AVM ISDN)
 - ltmodem (Winmodem) <== this is what I use.
