Eric, oh thanks for chasing that info down. fglrx, as I understand it, doesn't support xrandr 1.2 at all, so I don't expect that it will work very well with the new xrandr gui either. However, I've raised this feature need with AMD, so hopefully we'll have a solution there by Intrepid.
I heard it implied on the ubuntu-x@ mailing list that rotation might work on -ati if you're using xrandr. I seem to recall testing that out myself and finding the opposite to be the case, but my memory is sketchy. So YMMV there, but given nothing else seems to work, that would at least give an option.
