I have the hardware in question in this thread and have tested the patch [1] in 2.6.24, and it solves the problem perfectly, as others have discussed.
Unfortunately I don't have the disk space to compile an Ubuntu kernel with this patch, but I'm just adding input saying that it definately does fix the problem in 2.6.24. I assume it is strictly necessary to test such a simple modification (mmc_delay(2) to mmc_delay(10)) on a proper Ubuntu kernel...? Sorry I can't help with the Hardy kernel.
