Xorg7.3Integration was a Gutsy spec, and in fact what you quote is indeed how it was implemented for that.
For Hardy, please refer to the autoconfigure-monitor-frequency spec, which followed on to the Gutsy work by eliminating the need for xresprobe and ddcprobe. Additional details are in the HardyHardwareDetection spec.
