I'm not sure why Michael Kuhn's workaround did not work for me before,
as it does now on my hardy beta clean install (as opposed to my earlier
hardy alpha clean install).  I also have no ~/.fonts.conf , go figure.

also, I think

$ cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
$ sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-subpixel-rgb.conf

should be done as well, so that the subpixel ordering is nice.  This
makes a noticeable difference on my machine, others may need vrgb or bgr
or some such thing

That, or the settings in the fonts application should override what is
in this directory.
