The culprit in my case was XGL! I'm now running the latest ATi drivers
without XGL enabled as per these instructions:
http://forlong.blogage.de/article/2007/10/23/fglrx-8423---finally-with-
AIGLX-support and I haven't encountered the problem since. Hopefully
this will work for other people as well.
