I stumbled upon (I think) the same bug with CentOS 5.1 (ghostscript 8.15). The problem was that when I tried to convert the EPS to PDF with 'epstopdf' it failed with some ghostscript error message (evince also uses ghostscript). I managed to work around it by unchecking the 'Tight BBox' device option in xmgrace.
