We heavily really on setuptools (for the best or the worst :->). Would simply syncing the debian package be an option? The upstream code itself was consolidated quite a lot, and few features where added, so I would hope that no new bugs appear. Thanks for keeping me posted, this issue is very important for me, unfortunatebly as I know next to nothing about packaging, I have difficulties helping out.
