I'm having a similar problem. Sound used to work in Hardy Beta and
stopped. I can't play any sound using Rhythmbox or mplayer (videos work
without the sound). In Rhythmbox, the 'play' button can be pressed, the
progress bar doesn't move. I've been keeping the system updated so it
might be a breakage induced by some of the updates. I've got a 3 year
old laptop with an Intel integrated AC97 based soundcard.

The strange thing is that sound input (and some output) still works:
When I don't mute the integrated mic, I can hear myself clicking (mic is
just next to the touchpad).
