Problem solved. x server was not the problem, it seems my kernel somehow became broken during the update. I got rid of the 2.6.24-386 kernel I was using and updated kernel 2.6.24-12 Generic, now my broadcom wireless chipset won't work, but that seems to be the only thing I can't solve on my own.
