The device is a little NS box, the D-Link DS-323. Connecting via smbclient gives me the following:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 2.2.8a] Looks like it's running Samba 2.2.8a. There's a firmware upgrade to get it to Samba v3, I'll apply that and see what happens. Re: other bugs, looks like those are problems with Local FS -> Samba copies.
