I just encountered the same problem as Barrakketh and miekday after updating from 7.10 to 8.04 beta. Means I could only boot Ubuntu with the i386 kernel using only one core of my Intel Q6600 Quadcore machine.
Updating initramfs fixed the problem for me, too.
