Later on when I tried to update virtualbox-ose again with update- manager, a dialog informed me that snapshots will be lost. I tried hitting "cancel", which would lead to the "returned exit status 1" error. I tried again hitting "OK", and the upgrade went without errors.
I guess maybe that is the reason the upgrade failed, because the user hit "cancel" in the dialog. However, update-manager should not have crashed, and should have addressed the issue cleanly.
