On hardy beta suspend works, but hibernation does not resume properly.
The laptop starts through the "normal" grub starting procedure and ends
up in a very strange state when programs do not open properly. They try,
but nothing appears on the screen. Further, the shutdown dialogue does
not appear at all, shutting down means first shutting down X, then
pressing the power button briefly, (shutdown procedures begin), then
after everything halts, press power off manually.

After this kind of a restart the computer behaves normally again.
