I have installed Hardy Beta, and have the same problem. I cannot work
out any way of changing the volume, I have an Asus A6Rp laptop, and the
hardware volume buttons do not work (they do in Gutsy) and I cannot
change the volume slider on the panel, it just stays at the same volume.
I am logging this from my Gutsy install, and get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC861 Analog [ALC861 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC861 Digital [ALC861 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I can provide any additional information from the Hardy install if
required, just let me know.
