Public bug reported: In vmware-player, if the ~/.vmware/preferences file is owned by someone other than the user running it, say root, then the vmware player will simply silently fail.
You will not see any error messages (apart from a misleading red herring about libpng versions, which should be ignored for most vmware-player problems as far as I can see). Vmplayer will just do nothing. It was only by hacking the wrapper- gtk24.sh script to run an interactive bash shell, and stracing the real vmplayer binary that I was able to determine that this was the fault. The software should output an error message about the file open failure before it exits. ** Affects: vmware-player (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- No error message when file fails to read https://launchpad.net/bugs/64727 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
