Just tested the beta iso. Problem still exists exactly as described above. I don't see that anyone of the Ubuntu QA or dev team is caring about it, but if this bug will slip into the final hardy release, possibly many people who install it on a system with (maybe only older) Nvidia cards and activate the proprietary drivers probably will be pretty pissed when their Gnome environment is unusable afterwards! I am not caring much about the eye candy of compiz myself, but just pointing that out in the interest of a better hardy release.
